Living
Costs in North Cyprus
Your cost of
living in North Cyprus will vary depending on your lifestyle. If
you prefer to buy imported, named goods then you will be paying
a premium because North Cypru s has to pay high import costs. If
on the other hand you shop locally, buying your main essentials
at the market, drinking local wine and dining at the many excellent
Turkish Cypriot restaurants your cost of living will be impressively
low! You can make a small income go a long way here without having
to budget or restrict your lifestyle.
Supermarkets
There are many supermarkets both East and West of Kyrenia and more
planned for the Esentepe/Tatlisu areas. All supermarkets, no matter
how small accept payment with a credit card or cash (Turkish Lira
OR Foreign Currency!). You can now find most brands of goods. They
are open from about 8 am to 10 pm.
On Wednesday’s
there is an open market in Kyrenia near the bus station. It's a
good place for fresh fruit and vegetables, and you can also get
good quality Towels, Tshirts, shorts etc. Nicosia has a covered
bazaar/market, which is open everyday except Sundays. The cobbled
streets are packed with material shops, souvenirs, clothes, sports
clothing, bars and restaurants. Both are certainly worth a visit.
Household
Goods
Most household items can be bought in North Cyprus at about the
same price as Europe. Most international makes and models are available
(Whirlpool, Kelvinator, Candy, Philips, Pioneer, Panasonic, Siemens,
Arthur Martin, Bosch, Tefal, Beko, Sony etc) Auctions are also held
monthly where a vast array of items can be purchased at reasonable
prices.
Weights
& Measures
The metric system is the standard measurement used in North Cyprus.
Gardens
Importation of seeds and plants needs a certificate of origin and
freedom from disease supplied by the vendor. The goods are also
liable to examination by the Department of Agriculture. For stocking
gardens, the choice of plants is wide. A large variety of trees,
shrubs and flowers are available from the Government Horticultural
Centre in Güzelyurt. There are Government garden centres in
all the main towns, but the choice is more limited. Girne (Kyrenia)
now has several commercial garden centres and small shops selling
garden plants and pots.
